The game made it’s debut and immediately caught up in a storm of controversy, especially in Malaysia. The 2D brawler game is developed by an indie Taiwanese studio, a brawler games featuring deities from various pantheons such as Anubis, Zeus, Amaterasu, Buddha and Jesus beating the crap out of each other and to obtain the right to lead the world to enlightenment and granting salvation.
Fight of Gods quickly earned the ire of many religious leaders in Malaysia, who then rallied together and petitioned to block the game or any download link associated with it. Also, the religious leaders were concerned over fact of the deities are being pitted against one another may caused others to think that the religion associated with the deity is promoting violence among its faithfuls.
The echo of these worried and concerned voices rippled far enough to reach the ears of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) prompting them to take action upon this matter. MCMC, lead by Datuk Said Salleh Keruak immediately warranted an ultimatum to Steam demanding the platform site to remove the game from their site within 24 hours. Failing to comply the demand, MCMC proceeded with the site’s banning. Although, Valve claimed that MCMC never made specific and clear that Fight of Gods is the reason for the banning. Read here for more on the banning.
The game is far from perfect or being a good source of entertainment, and corny to boot (especially the moves name). The animations are clunky and awkward, stiff even at times. The offensive thing about this game is the inclusion of Jesus Christ among in it’s character roster, other than that none. But yes, i can see from where the worry came from, i mean, Jesus getting his butt kicked by other gods? That’s just plain offensive. Plus, it is rumoured the responsible studio planning to add The Prophet Muhammad, let’s hope it won’t come to pass (are they planning to start a crusade or something?). This could probably be their way of garnering attention and boosting their sales, but…i don’t think it’s working in their favour.
This game in a nutshell is nothing but below average, flawed game, and it doesn’t contain any faith-shaking or deviating indoctrinations (unless they changed that later in the future), the offensiveness is only appearence wise.
